DATE: May 1, 2009
Greetings. This email was sent to all attorneys whose licenses expire on June 30, 2009. You will need to know your attorney license number in order to relicense. If you are unable to locate your license card, you may email jud-attylicensing@state.vt.us and request your license number.
ATTORNEY LICENSE RENEWAL INFORMATION
In order to renew your active or inactive license for July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011, your licensing fee with all required information must be received by July 1, 2009; if not, your license will be suspended and you will need to pay an additional $100.00 reinstatement fee to obtain your license.
There is no need to wait to relicense until after your CLE is completed. You are encouraged to relicense online soon, so that your ability to practice law is not at risk.
If you are experiencing financial uncertainty, you are encouraged to relicense as inactive so that you remain in good standing and can become reactivated more easily and less expensively.
There are 3 ways to renew your license:
1) Online using E-check for payment – FREE
To pay by E-Check, all you will need is your check book for your routing and
account number.
To get to the online service go to: https://secure.vermont.gov/courts/licensing/
The online licensing service, with payment by E-Check (automatic check transfer), cuts down on paperwork and provides you with your new licensing card sooner. It saves us money by reducing staff time for processing paper filing and may keep licensing fees lower in the future. It also provides you with an electronic receipt of your payment.
An enhanced access fee of $10.00 will be charged for the use of the online service; however, a $10.00 discount will be applied to payments made via E-Check so there is no additional cost to you.
2) Online using a debit or credit card - $10 fee
There is an additional enhanced access fee to use the credit card service of $10.
To get to the online service go to: https://secure.vermont.gov/courts/licensing/
The online licensing service, which includes payment by debit or credit card, cuts down on paperwork and provides you with your new licensing card sooner. It saves us money by reducing staff time for processing paper filing and may keep licensing fees lower in the future. It also provides you with an electronic receipt of your payment.
3) Traditional filing of attorney licensing statement by paper check – additional two weeks for processing.
If you do not use the online service, you must use the 2009 Attorney Licensing Statement at
http://www.vermontjudiciary.org/eforms/Attorney_Licensing_Statement.pdf
This is a fillable form which can be completed online
and then mailed to the Attorney Licensing Office at
Because we need to hire additional staff to process these forms, it may be up to an additional two weeks to process your form and mail your license card. Incomplete or illegible forms will be returned to you and no additional time for completion will be given. Your license card and cancelled check should be considered your receipt of payment.
Firms and organizations which choose to submit a single check for all their attorneys must submit licensing statements for all of their attorneys with that payment. We will not accept piecemeal filings.
RETIRED FROM THE PRACTICE OF LAW?
If you have retired or resigned from the practice of law, you will not have to pay a licensing fee, but you do have to notify the licensing office that you have retired/resigned by emailing jud-attylicensing@state.vt.us You will no longer be licensed to practice in the State of Vermont and you will no longer be able to identify yourself as either an active or inactive attorney. This office will no longer send you notices sent to members of the Bar. If you choose to seek reinstatement at a later date, you will need to begin the admission process again, which may include having to take the bar exam.
CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION REPORTING
Your Continuing Legal Education affidavit is also due by July 1. This includes the professionalism requirement which became effective last August http://www.vermontjudiciary.org/LC/Statues%20and%20Rules/Promulgated-jun17-08-%20MCLE3.pdf The list of approved professionalism courses is available at http://www.vermontjudiciary.org/LC/d-BBELibrary/Professionalism_40709.pdf

The form is available at http://www.vermontjudiciary.org/LC/d-BBELibrary/CLE_Affidavit.pdf This can be filled out online, or printed out and filled in by hand, but must be mailed by July 1.
