PURPOSE:

Will perform all duties necessary to provide law clerk services for the presiding judge.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

$ Researches general and specific legal issues.

$ Analyzes issues in specific cases or files and advise presiding judge.

$ Drafts memoranda of law.

$ Prepares draft judicial opinions.

$ Drafts court orders.

$ Compiles and draft jury instructions.

$ Answers procedural inquiries from court staff.

$ Maintains courthouse libraries, including Vermont Supreme Court slip opinions and indexes thereto.

$ Prepares indexes to Vermont Supreme Court slip opinions (individually assigned).

$ Attends law clerk meetings and participate in state wide law clerk projects.

$ Completes daily logs and file control charts as required by Chief Law Clerk.

$ Forwards noteworthy written trial court opinions to Chief Law Clerk.

$ Shares legal resources, research and work product with other law clerks.

$ Completes special projects as assigned on individual basis by Chief Law Clerk.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Juris Doctor or admission to the Vermont Bar.
